Remora's Buda - USS Remora - 1955: We were anchored in Hong Kong, China. I was third class Engineman in the A-Gang. The Engineering Officer (Lt E. M. Eyler) Handed me a brass buda about six inchs tall and told me to mount it permanently on the sail in front of the plastic bubble at that time the bridge was only a few feet above the main deck. ( the sail was a lot different than the one in the picture) I brassed two studs on the bottom of the Buda and bolted it to the sail in front of the bridge. I covered it with my foul weather jacket. When the Skipper (Lcdr D. Y. Munnikuyson) saw my jacket he told me to get the jacket off the sail. When he saw the Buda he was very pleased. The Buda remained on the Bridge for a while after we returned to San Diego. Not to long after the USS Rayzorback put a Tiger on their sail. Then it became great sport to steal them. The Squadron Commander put a stop to the thievery because some people got hurt when fights broke out over the Buda and The Tiger. I still like the Walt Disney Patch better than the one with Buda.
