Lone Airdale vs Remora Crew, USS Remora, 1967: While sitting
at the bar in the Starlight Club in Yokosuka there were about 30 of the crew
in deep concentration talking about the tours and pictures that were taken recently
on our short stay in port. All the sudden a young white hat stubbled through
the curtain and into the bar. He found his way to the bar and after sitting
he was told by one of the crew that this was a submariners bar so he would have
to leave, he politely answered with a "make me" so he was grabbed
by the collar and 4 guys throw him through the curtain and out the door. The
four guys no sooner sat back down and before they could lift their glasses in
walked the airdale again without any fear whatsoever, this time the same four
guys grabbed him again and through the curtain and out the door but this time
with a little more speed and power behind it. The crew laughed and mentioned
that this guy had a lot of nerve and would have made a good boat sailor when
low and behold the curtain flew open and the airdale yelled a few words and
spoke of our mothers using words that we boat sailors weren't familiar with.
We just looked at each other walked over to the airdale grabbed him by the arms
and drug him to the bar and praised him for his courage while making sure that
he had plenty to drink the rest of the night. I'll never forget the look on
his face when we after him the third time. In conclusion there is a short Mexican
ex aircraft carrier sailor out there somewhere that's still telling that story
to his grandkids about how he took on the crew of a submarine and won. In my
books he did win. He won the friendship and respect of the crew that was present
from the USS Remora. ( This was a true story)
